Construction affecting Waterfall Avenue will continue

CRAIGHALL PARK – Huge excavation on Waterfall Avenue has the road closed off at one point.

Road users will be disappointed to learn that the construction affecting traffic flow on Waterfall Avenue in Craighall Park will not see such an early end as expected.

The road is almost entirely blocked off by a huge mound of soil as well as construction barriers and signs. Traffic is often seen piling up as motorists navigate the large construction area that spills onto the road.

The Rosebank Killarney Gazette wrote an article Roadworks will finally end, week ending 23 February where Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) said they expected construction to be finalised by 28 February.

“The JRA has granted a wayleave for a sewer upgrade at Waterval Avenue by a private developer,” said the agency’s Bertha Peters-Scheepers.

The sewer pipe needed to be replaced by a larger one in order to deal with the added capacity from the nearby complex and development in the area.

Ward 90 councillor, Martin Williams looks into the deep hole where the sewer pipe is currently being upgraded.

Ward 90 councillor, Martin Williams also expected the upgrade to be completed three weeks ago. “The foreman on site said it would be finished by the end of that week, but now completion seems a long way off.”

Williams visited the site on 8 March and was able to identify that much work still needs to be done.

“Information given to me on site last month was regrettably not accurate and there have been complications. The senior consulting engineer now indicates that the project will be completed by the end of March.”

He has apologised to residents, and to motorists who would otherwise be using Waterfall Avenue. “This is a major project, which was unavoidable, given the pressures on sewers in the area.
