Parktown Boys’ youngster reaches out for a good cause

PARKTOWN – A Parktown Boys' youngster has taken the initiative to bring schools together in aid of raising awareness for cancer.

A youngster with a big heart has taken it upon himself to inspire other teenagers to brave the challenge of donning the purple speedo in aid of raising awareness of male cancer.

Dean Fin (17), who is in Grade 11 at Parktown Boys’ High School, in perfect conjunction with Hollard, is currently calling on youngsters from Jeppe High School for Boys, King Edward VII School (Kes), St Stithians College and St John’s College to pledge their support to the cause by participating in the 2018 Hollard DareDevil Run which takes place at Zoo Lake Sports Club on 16 March.

Dean Fin holds up his certificate of achievement after being selected for the U16 boys’ team who competed at the South African Schools’ Inter-provincial Water Polo Tournament in December last year.

“After [consulting] with a couple of doctors, my grandfather, who’s now 65, was diagnosed with cancer and was first given three weeks and then three months to live,” Dean said, adding that his grandfather’s ordeal is the main inspiration behind him pursuing the task of recruiting boys from his school and others for the initiative.

“I’ve received an [overwhelming] reception from the other schools – a whole lot more than expected for that matter. We’ve gotten Kes as a definite as well as Jeppe and St Stithians. St John’s are still finalising which looks positive. Hopefully it’s a lot more and we excel the 5 000 number that Hollard have put out.”

Fin, who is a first team water polo player, said he hopes that an unprecedented 7 000 participants, inclusive of male staff and every boy across Parktown Boys’ and the other schools, turn up for this year’s event.

He will deliver a speech expressing his appeal to staff and boys from the other schools during a school assembly on 20 February.
