Eight youngsters from Jan Celliers Laerskool take part in Robotics Festival

PARKVIEW – One of the teams from Jan Celliers Laerskool has been invited to take part in the Robotics World Championships.

Jan Celliers Laerskool entered three teams into the Robotics Festival hosted by Trophy Robotics and achieved wonderful results.

Trophy Robotics aims to promote hard fun which gives youngsters a challenge and leads to a solution through practical application.

Christiaan Portwig and Hein Gertenbach’s San team finished third overall in the parade division – a parade of autonomous robots. Marco Prins, Simon Butler and Christiaan Venter’s Future Tech team took second place in the same division.

Liam Byrne, Carl Swanepoel and Roux Marais from team LCR finished overall in first place in the BottleSumo competition. BottleSumo requires the participants to use their robot to push a bottle off a table first or be the last robot remaining on the table. The team was also invited to the Robotics World Championships, which will take place at the Lawrence Technological University in Michigan, USA, in May next year.

The world championships, which is called Robofest, is a festival of competitions and events with autonomous robots. It encourages young minds to have fun while learning principles of science, technology, engineering and maths as well as computer science. Participants design, construct and programme the robots.

The festival hosts children from grades 5 to 12 from all over the world.

Head of Department for Media and Computer Education at Jan Celliers Laerskool, Fred van Zyl said, “We at Jan Celliers are immensely proud of these learners and we wish to take the opportunity to congratulate our learners who have received this prestigious invitation to not just represent our school abroad but also South Africa in next year’s world championships.”
