Educating children through science and Halloween

BLAIRGOWRIE – Science-inspired Halloween celebrations were in the air at the Blairgowrie Recreation Centre, while children rocked up in the most intriguing costumes on the day.

The Blairgowrie Recreation Centre in Randburg was the setting for an Einstein-inspired Halloween science adventure on 28 October.

The objective of the event was to encourage children in the foundation and intermediate phases of their schooling careers to become more interested in Stem (Science, Technology, English and Mathematics) subjects, while at the same time raising funds for the Live Kaizen Programming and Robotics Course.

The course programme is designed through the collaborative efforts of a psychologist, engineers and scientists, and is aimed at introducing children to multiple Stem streams and concepts.

Speaking to the publication, event organiser, Shazia Labhadur said the Halloween science adventure presented an excellent opportunity for the children to conduct experiments while having the Halloween theme in mind.

“Instead of simply making green slime, children were made to understand the science behind the making of glow-in-the-dark slime, in order for them to better understand these concepts,” said Labhadur.

“This was in order for them not to be so intimidated by the [idea of learning] maths, science and engineering by the time they get to high school since they would’ve already been exposed to these concepts,” she said.

On the day, however, the children wore an array of impressive Halloween costumes mimicking their favourite personalities. Costumes ranging from Harry Potter, Marvel superheroes The Hulk and Iron Man, Gandalf The Great as well the famous theoretical physicist, Albert Einstein were on show. “Having science tied in with the whole Halloween theme made for quite an exciting and fun-filled educational day for the children,”
