NANDE NYEZI: I feel we're no longer as safe as what we were, say 10 years back. It's a very different South Africa now. The outlook doesn't look good.

We asked residents what their thoughts were on the national crime statistics for the period 2016/17 and how it impacted the area that they live in. This is what they had to say …

 

GRANT PHILLIPS: The crime in the surrounds of the area I live in makes me feel uneasy considering that it could spiral out of control at any time.
ISMAEEL BHAIA: Crime is escalating because the people who are supposed to be accountable are deviating from the status quo.
MUNEERA OMAR: I’m feeling a little bit safer since there’s not been that many incidents of housebreakings or hijackings in my area of late.
MBALI SIKAPU: I don’t feel safe having to leave work late at night, more so because it’s not easy to ask for assistance in the community as you can’t trust anyone.
