More than 300 children of Parkview Junior School were given a talk on the importance and benefits of recycling.
Mrs South Africa finalist, Bayanda Gumede and Mpact Recycling joined forces to inspire and educate the foundation phase children in an informative and fun-filled way.
Mpact Recycling is the largest paper recycler in South Africa, annually recycling about 450 000 tons of paper. Much to the children’s delight, the paper recycler’s mascot, Ronnie Recycler, showed them which items they could recycle and why.
Gumede, speaking to the Rosebank Killarney Gazette said, “I got the opportunity to visit the school with [the headline sponsor] Tammy Taylor Mrs SA partners, Mpact, with the sole purpose of encouraging the children to continue recycling and to remind them why it is important for them to do so. Most importantly, however, we wanted to thank the school for doing such a good job in the past.”
School teacher, Shereen Cachalia said the school had been involved in recycling for more than 20 years.
She added that the children were exposed to videos on recycling and encouraged to bring paper material to the school for recycling purposes.
“We stress to the kids the importance of saving trees – each Ronnie bin saves seven trees from being cut down – so recycling is very important to save the environment,” she added.
Gumede concluded that it was important to promote the culture of recycling to children from a young age so that it could make an impact on their parents and communities as well.
“What I find even more exciting is the fact that children can go back home and encourage their parents to recycle too.”
