Rosebank Homeless Association continues its hard work

ROSEBANK – The Rosebank Homeless Association continues to work tirelessly on various projects.

The Rosebank Homeless Association (RHA) is working tirelessly on various programmes to help aid the homeless around the Rosebank area.

World Homeless Day was commemorated on 10 October to bring awareness to the difficulties faced by the homeless, as well as to encourage communities to work together to find solutions.

The association supports a sewing project called Zinto Zinhle, which provides fabric and sewing machines to women who then sell the items they make, such as table mats and aprons to various markets.

The association also works closely with the Immaculate Homeless Shelter which is the only homeless shelter in close proximity to the Rosebank area. The red collection box in the Rosebank Mall, provided by the association encourages residents to donate items of clothing and blankets which are then distributed at Immaculata.

Judith Briggs, the chairperson of the association said, “What we find about people who are sleeping on the streets is that very often they’ve only got what they’re standing up in. The community has been fantastic with donating items because people like to know where it’s going.

“All the items are distributed from Immaculata because they have the facilities to sort the clothing and keep it and it’s all properly done.”

Michael Ntuli, the manager of Immaculata, added that there is a computer school at the Immaculata shelter which provides computer literacy lessons to six people. The shelter also distributes clothing and toiletries to about 30 people each week, as clothes are often stolen from the homeless.

The association will also be working on a project to provide small lockers to the homeless so that they can keep their important documents safe without the risk of them being stolen.

“We’re not looking for financial donations, we’re looking for jobs and opportunities for people, that’s the best thing.”
