A workman-like performance

JOBURG – Having claimed the Premier League B title of the Gauteng Cricket Board last season, the Old Edwardian Society (Old Eds) cricket team is readying itself for an equally solid showing this upcoming season.

The team gained automatic promotion into Premier League A for their exploits in the lower tier and will be bolstered by the return of former players, who once again join the club’s ranks for the new season. Team coach Brandon Buckley said revisiting last season’s winning recipe would be key.

“We played as a team both on and off the field last year. We practised together, played together and [even] teed off at golf together,” he said.

Last season’s team captain, Murray Workman will continue on as skipper, while the inclusion of a few provincial players is bound to strengthen the side.

“Some of our players have been playing in the local IPL and are getting good practice ahead of the season,” said Buckley. “We know that Wanderers will be strong and Jeppe is another side to look out for. And so, if we get the basics right then we can [guarantee] ourselves a top-four finish.

“Every player will, however, have a role to play, and if those targets can be achieved, we can ensure ourselves a good finish.”

Old Eds will play a friendly against the Wanderers Cricket Club and a pre-season game against King Edward VII School ahead of the start of the Sunday 50 Overs competition on 1 October.
