Police free Uber driver from boot of his hijacked car

JOBURG – Johannesburg Central Police arrest two suspects following a hijacking in Hillbrow involving an Uber cab. Two suspects remain at large while one recovers in a Johannesburg hospital after sustaining a bullet wound to the lower body.

Two suspects aged between 30 and 32 were arrested by Johannesburg Central Police during a patrol in the CBD at about 3.30am on 22 May.

Commenting on the incident, Joburg Central Police spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele said police were quick to notice the suspicious behaviour of people inside a car. “Police were busy with their routine crime prevention duties when they spotted a white Toyota Corolla with four occupants,” said Mbele.

“When police tried to stop the vehicle, the occupants jumped out and one of them pointed a firearm at the officers. The officers retaliated… resulting in one of the suspects taking a hit to the lower body.”

Mbele explained that half-an-hour before, an Uber driver had been hijacked and placed in the trunk of his vehicle. “It is alleged that the suspects hijacked an Uber driver in Hillbrow at about 3am, placed him in the boot of the car and drove off.” Police freed the Uber driver.

Two of the four suspects were arrested, with one being taken to hospital for treatment under police guard. Police seized two firearms and have launched an investigation. The other two suspects remain at large.
