Mashaba wants to tackle crime in Joburg

BRAAMFONTEIN – Mayor Herman Mashaba promises to put the poor at the heart of his ten point plan to improve the city.

City of Joburg mayor Herman Mashaba gave his first State of the City address at the new Chamber of Council in Braamfontein on 3 May.

During the address, Mashaba highlighted some of the key points from his ten point plan which he intends to focus on during his term as mayor and which he believes are key to creating change.

Mashaba has continued to assert that he will run a pro-poor government. Some of the points in his ten point plan include 5 percent economic growth, an improved culture of service delivery, improved public safety and a transparent government that fights corruption.

“It is important that our residents know where we are and where we are going in our administration. To meet our challenges we are carrying out a new strategy for the City of Joburg and that strategy aims to prioritise our residents’ most pressing needs.”

During his address Mashaba highlighted problems he intends to solve in the inner city including crime, lack of housing and service delivery. Mashaba said he allocated R290 million to Joshco, the Johannesburg Social Housing Company, in order to provide affordable housing for over a thousand families.

He also pledged to fight a growing drug problem with the K9 unit, improve traffic congestion issues and problems with traffic lights and [set up] dedicated municipal courts to deal with by-law infringements.

Mashaba also expressed his appreciation for members of the EFF with whom he has been working closely to ensure the government adopts an approach of insourcing jobs.

“Looking at all of these developments in line with our ten point plan it is, without a doubt, that day by day and step by step we are beginning to make real and lasting change,” said Mashaba.
