The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has committed to making a bend on Kent Road, dubbed ‘death corner’ by Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams, a safer one for motorists.
The current stop sign on Kent Road is not visible to motorists coming around the corner so they are not able to stop in time.
This came after concerns were raised by residents living along Northumberland Avenue and Kent Road in Dunkeld. Williams answered to their concerns and secured a meeting with Owen Whelan, a traffic engineer for the agency to discuss how the road could be made safer.
According to Williams, as a result of the stop sign not being visible there have been several accidents and also road signs knocked down and damaged as well as residents’ walls being driven into.
“I can say that the JRA is committing a 100 per cent to ensuring that the corner is made into a safer one. We will be painting on the tar to alert motorists of the stop sign ahead. We will also be putting up signs… so motorists are fully aware of the stop sign ahead,” said Whelan.
He added that the agency was also committed to refurbishing the traffic calming speed bumps on Northumberland Avenue.
