The Old Parktonian Bowls Club invites members of other sports to try play theirs

BORDEAUX – The braais were smoking and the bar was packed as 96 people filled two greens.

Cricket, rugby, squash, hockey and soccer players had a great time learning to play bowls at the Old Parktonian Bowls Club‘s inter-sectional fun day.

Maintenance staff also joined in on the fun on 21 March at an event held to promote the game and form friendships across the different sports at Old Parktonian Sports Club in Bordeaux.

The braais were smoking and the bar was packed, as 96 people filled two greens and played the day out in mixed teams of four.

“It has been a huge success, we even had to turn people away because there was not enough space for everyone,” said the bowls club’s chairperson, Gary Austin.

Thomas Ramano, who normally maintains the greens and practises once in a blue moon, said it was nice to play in a match against other players of different sports.

Squash player, Lauren Weller said compared to squash, bowls was a bit slower but both sports strained her hamstring.

“It has been very fun,” she added.

Austin explained that bowls at the club was on a high after the 1st team recently won the Johannesburg Bowls Association Second Division league, and the 2nd team won the association’s Third Division league.

The teams were promoted to the Premier League and Second Division respectively.
