Adventure awaits in Kouga

JOHANNESBURG – Adventure racers will soon explore the Kouga in the toughest event on the calendar.

This year’s Expedition Africa for the Adventure Racing World Series event will give athletes from around the world an opportunity to explore the notorious adventure province in the expedition from 12–21 May.

The 500km race in the Cape St Francis area has been organised and designed by Stephan Muller from Kinetic Events. The race will feature teams of two and four through the Kouga and Baviaans routes, carefully designed to integrate all the demanding, yet beautiful attractions the celebrated area has to offer.

“Teams will trek, kayak and cycle through extremely remote areas, venturing where few humans have ever set foot before,” said Muller.

“Expedition Africa 2017’s teams will explore magnificent mountain ranges and [move] on to the beautiful coastlines of the Eastern Cape.”

The special highlight of this year’s course is the Baviaans region, which is home to the Baviaanskloof wilderness area and a Unesco World Heritage Site, the largest of its kind in southern Africa. The 225 000ha mega-reserve of unspoilt, rugged mountainous terrain will offer athletes from far and wide an entirely new experience.

For the first time in the history of Expedition Africa, a ‘dark zone’ along one of the hiking legs, will be provided so teams don’t have to travel during the night; this is to ensure their safety as they will navigate through a wildlife area.

“An event like Expedition Africa will not only reveal athletes to… beauty but will create a most memorable camaraderie among all athletes taking part. Such an experience will truly showcase the love of adventure we all share,” said race co-organiser, Heidi Muller.

The Cape St Francis Resort is the official accommodation host for the expedition. The event headquarters and race village will be at the resort, located in the Kouga region on the southern coast. While teams explore parts of this adventure province, their families will have the opportunity to experience and enjoy the area, too. Live tracking will be available on expafrica.live site so that families, friends and fellow supporters are able to track the race from the comfort of their homes, 24 hours a day.
