Old Eds hockey finish third in premier league

HOUGHTON – Old Eds take confidence into 2017 hockey season.

The Old Eds premier league men’s hockey team has finished the 2016 season in third place.

The club said the impressive top-three finish is an indication of a successful season. For the fourth season in a row, the team only dropped points against winners of the league, University of Johannesburg (UJ), and runners-up, Wanderers.

Summing up the season, Old Eds coach Thornton McDade said, “The disappointing aspect of the season was the number of injuries we had throughout the season. Without a full- or part-time conditioning coach we battled with injuries and the players’ inability to condition themselves to complete the season was a challenge.”

McDade added that for Old Eds to compete with UJ and Wanderers in future, they would need to stick to their game plan and dominate by playing their structures and not get drawn into playing opposition style hockey.

The club was able to include some of their younger players in the premier league and the end of season tournament, the Brown Cup.

“This sort of experience is exceptionally important to the development of young players who can make a huge impact in their school teams with what they learn playing league hockey,” concluded McDade.
