King David wins soccer glory

VICTORY PARK – King David Victory Park wins the U16 Johannesburg School Football League.

The King David Victory Park High School (KDVP) U16 soccer team are the proud winners of the Johannesburg School Football League.

Acting head of sports and coach, Jonathan Tshona said this soccer season has been one of the greatest the school has ever had. “It’s safe to say that high school soccer at KDVP is growing and will continue to do so.”

Tshona said the road to the finals was not an easy one as the boys were faced with big soccer schools in their group. The boys had previously lost to Hyde Park High School and Reddam House Bedfordveiw Private School in the group matches. “Nevertheless the boys continued to work extra hard and even requested more training sessions.”

Their hard work paid off when they beat Roosevelt High School, Curro Aurora Independent School and King David Linksfield. The boys finished second in their group and secured a spot in the semi-finals.

The team played the semi-final against the winner of Group B, Edenvale High School. Tshona said the team played extremely well and got a well-deserved result of 3–1.

On 21 September the team played in the final against Reddam House. Tshona expressed that the bus trip to Bedfordveiw was one filled with nostalgic thoughts of their journey to this big day of finals.

The first half of the game was evenly matched, with both teams attacking and defending well. “I must say that I was impressed with the talent displayed by both teams, the boys played very good soccer and can, hopefully, represent the national side one day.”

The match was an end-to-end encounter and in the second half of extra time, Reddam scored the first goal of the match. “The discipline, dedication, passion and ‘never give up’ attitude from the boys was clearly displayed when the opposition responded quickly to the goal.” Eventually, Reddam equalised and the match ended with a 1–1 draw.

Penalties decided the outcome of the match and with both teams having missed one penalty each, it went to sudden death.

The goalkeeper, Joshua Widegger saved the first penalty of the sudden death round leaving room for Joshua Nossel to boldly bring the trophy to King David Victory Park with a glorious goal.
