The Wilds Precinct to undergo major revamp

HOUGHTON – St John's College will host a run 16 October.

The Wilds is a nature reserve set against the rocky hills linking Johannesburg’s CBD and inner city areas to the leafier suburbs of Houghton and Killarney positioned to the north of the ridge.

In an effort to reclaim The Wilds as a safe park, homeowners, schools, non-profit organisations and businesses in the area are collaborating with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo to upgrade and restore The Wilds and its surrounding areas.

They are in the process of setting up a City Improvement District (CID), which will manage, upgrade and maintain the precinct and find ways in which to improve security in the area so that people will feel safe enough to visit the park once more.

St John’s College will be hosting a trail run called, On the Trail, on 16 October. The run is aimed at families and more serious trail runners, with all proceeds going towards The Wilds Precinct. Entry forms are available on the school’s website.

“We are proud to be associated with the initiative. We understand that sustainable development begins with awareness, followed by active citizenry. The Wilds Precinct is a wonderful opportunity to show leadership and to play a part in establishing Johannesburg as a world-class African city,” said Devlin Brown from St John’s College communications department.

The objectives of The Wilds Precinct CID are set out in its vision statement, “It is our vision to reclaim The Wilds as a beautiful and safe indigenous park, and establish The Wilds Precinct as a leading education, heritage and natural belt for the benefit of all the people of Johannesburg and its visitors.”

The CID will become operational on 1 October, preceded by a blitz operation during the last week of September.
