Hyde Park’s whizz-kids excel

HYDE PARK – Whizz-kids outshine the rest and earn a spot in the final.

Hyde Park High School pupils excelled at the Nickelodeon’s Genius competition held at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown Johannesburg, earning a spot in the final.

Britney Carstens, who is the team leader, entered the competition online and received one of the highest scores in maths and science in the shortest period of time, in Gauteng, catapulting her into the next round. Carstens then invited Rebecca Oosthuizen and Duran Reddy to join her on her team representing Hyde Park High.

On the first day of the competition, the trio participated in a host of workshops built around maths and science. On the second day, the team went up against other teams from Gauteng South, outsmarting them and taking a spot in the final and winning books to the value of R10 000.

The two final teams will each receive R50 000 per team and R100 000 each in an Absa MegaU bank account. The teams will stand a chance to compete to become South Africa’s genius and win a fully-paid trip to Florida, USA to visit Cape Kennedy Centre and Universal Studios.

An elated Carstens said it was an amazing opportunity and encouraged all pupils to take part in future events. “It is quite unbelievable to all of us that we actually won the High School Gauteng South division along with IR Griffith Primary School in the junior section,” she said.

Hyde Park High School headmaster, Manolis Vogiatzis commended the team on their outstanding achievement and wished them good luck for the forthcoming finals.
