Rosebank Rotary Club assists emerging artists

ROSEBANK – The Rosebank Rotary Club has helped two emerging artists.

The Rosebank Rotary Club has assisted two emerging artists as part of its programme aimed at helping job creation.

The club has purchased an etching press, which will be used by Lebohang Sithole and Jan Tshilhuthula to enhance their monthly incomes. The press will enable them to run a number of etching and linocutting workshops on a regular basis.

Sithole and Tshilhuthula presented very successful workshops using a borrowed press at the recent Rotary Arts Festival at Hyde Park Corner. Visitors were encouraged to prepare their own etching or linocut and have it printed on site. These demonstrations were very well attended by participants of all age groups.

Their combined monthly income relies solely on artwork sales. Joan Sainsbury the curator of the Rotary Arts Festival and her Figures and Forms Group approached Rotary about the possibility of acquiring a press that would enable these two artists to add to their income. The club readily agreed to purchase the press and donated it to Figures and Forms, who will now assist the two artists to maximise their potential. Based on the huge interest shown at the festival, Sainsbury has set up a programme of monthly workshops at the Parkhurst Recreation Centre, where the duo will present their work.

All income derived at the workshops goes directly to the artists, and the rec centre has agreed to supply a room for the workshops.
