Old Eds to host major water polo tournament

HOUGHTON – Teams to go head-to-head at the 2016 water polo championships.

The annual Old Eds water polo tournament will take place at the King Edward VII School pool from 6 October, with the finals being played on 9 October.

The men’s teams include Old Eds, OJ Eagles, Rondebosch Boys High old boys, Gauteng schools U18 team, Maties, University of Cape Town, Wahoo Warriors and Pukke Penguins.

The women will consist of the University of Cape Town, OJ Eagles, Water Warriors, Maties, Silvertree, Tukkies and Wits.

Teams making their first appearance at the tournament are Pukke Penguins and Wahoo Warriors among the men and Silvertree from Cape Town in the women’s.

In the men’s competition, the OJ Eagles are considered to be the strongest team and top contenders. In the women’s challenge, with the absence of last year’s winner, Varsity College, last year’s finalists UCT have a chance to take the cup, as they did two years ago.

A number of current and former South African water polo players will be in action and the technical staff will be headed by Old Eds’ Gus Pinker who has just returned from officiating at the Rio Olympic Games.

The tournament will commence at 6pm on opening night with the local teams in action, and from Friday, play will start at 7am and go through until 9pm. The finals are scheduled for 2pm for the women and 3pm for the men.

Food and drinks will be available throughout the day and entrance is free.
