Two young dancers represented South Africa at the Dance World Cup in Jersey in Channel Islands.
Jade Brummer and Chloe Mallet, both 13 years old and dancers at the Russian School of Ballet in Parkhurst, spent more than 30 hours every week in preparation for the competition.
The two, who were competing for the first time in an international competition, performed three duets and two solos. Mallet, who has been training in ballet for less than three years, came 14th out of 31 contestants for her solo performance. “The competition was tough but really encouraging to see dance on international terms,” she said.
“I believe South African dancers have the ability to take the international dance world by storm.”
Brummer was placed 10th out of 17 contestants and was noticed by the judges for her natural dancing ability. “I have seen many amazing dancers and was especially inspired by the medal winners in my age category,” she said.
“This competition has taught me so much and I have gained a lot of experience. I can truly say that I would want to go back and hopefully place in the top three.”
Chloe Mallet represents South Africa at the Dance World Cup in Jersey, Channel Islands.
Yana Auger, owner of the Russian School of Ballet said it was a pleasure being part of the South African Dance Team and wearing the SA team jackets. She said she enjoyed taking part in the parade along the streets of Jersey and to be among 3 000 competing young dancers.
“It has been an honour for our dancers to compete against technically strong dancers,” said Auger.
“It was challenging yet rewarding, challenges give us the opportunity to grow.”
According to Chris Stapelberg, head of Dance World Cup in South Africa, the local team did extremely well, garnering multiple medals including gold in the different disciplines. “The award for the best team in the competition was awarded to South Africa,” he said.
