JOBURG – Local club jets off to compete in prestigious Spanish tournament,

Wanderers Warriors U13 football team is going to Spain to compete in the prestigious 25th edition of the Donosti Cup which begins on 4 July.

Formed in 2011, the Warriors are giving the well-established clubs a run for their money. The U13 team won the VW football tournament last year beating teams such as Supersport and Black Aces on their way.

The Donosti Cup attracts more than 300 teams from around the world with Real Sociedad’s Anoeta Stadium and state-of-the-art training complex at Zubieta forming the hub of this great event.

The Warriors tour will also include a visit to the home of four-times Champions League winners FC Barcelona.

Head coach of the Warriors, Herold Matodzi said the experience the players get from such tournaments was vital for their tactical development. “For us, the main thing is still to give the players international exposure. When we travel overseas we realise that professionalism starts at an early age,” he said.

The experienced mentor said the tournament had helped his team in previous years to be more tactically equipped than their South African counterparts.

According to Matodzi, Warriors soccer club strives to create and nurture players who play beautiful, attacking football with flair, confidence and enjoyment and without fear of making mistakes. “We attempt to provide a solid skills foundation to serve as a base on which our players’ games are built,” he said.

The team will depart South African shores on 28 June with 20 players, two coaches and 15 relatives.
