Madiba’s kindness lives on

HOUGHTON - Nelson Mandela's kindness lives on as he rewards those close to his heart.

The Executors of the State of the late Nelson Mandela have made public cash bequests made in accordance with his will in Houghton.

Deputy Chief Justice, Dikgang Moseneke, who is one of the executors said it was not custom for the distribution to be a public event, however, Mandela lived and worked for the people of South Africa and he wanted the schools and institutions of higher learning that molded him to be remembered.

“I have come to tell the nation that we have come to the end of our tasks and have done as he had asked,” said Moseneke. “We can celebrate and acknowledge that we have done as he had asked,” he said.

Before getting on with the business of the day of handing out cheques, the executors said they had prepared and lodged with the Master of the High Court a first liquidation and distribution account and that the account had been approved by the Master.

It was announced that no assets belonging to Mandela had been sold to pay bequests and to discharge estate liabilities and costs.

University of Fort Hare was among the recipients of the cash cheques. Ayanda Mjekula, deputy chairperson of the centenary committee said being bequeathed symbolised Mandela’s love and hopes for the university.

“On behalf of the university, we accept the challenge of this bequest to uphold the legacy of Fort Hare and to fulfill the promise of education in this country,” said Mjekula.

Wits University’s vice chancellor for research and postgraduate affairs, Zeblon Vilakazi, received the cheque on behalf of his institution. Vilakazi thanked the University of Fort Hare for shaping Mandela and giving him to the world at large. He was grateful for the bequest and said it would assist many generations to come.

“This token of appreciation from Mr Mandela will go a long way in sending out a message of the value of higher education,” he said.

Payments were also made to Clarkebury High School‚ Healdtown Comprehensive High School‚ Qunu Secondary School and Orlando West High School, and nine members of Vilakazi’s staff also received cash bequests.
