Kamers Market round-up

HOUGHTON – The City Buzz team went to check out the Kamers Market that took place at St Johns College over the weekend…

The Kamers Market happens at St John’s College once a year, as the market travels across the country setting up in hotspots such as Hermanus, Stellenbosch, Irene in Pretoria and finally, Jozi.

The market is a hotbed of local creative talent where traders gather to showcase their wares and get to know their customers on an intimate level.

First and foremost, we recommend you think ahead for next year’s market and buy your tickets online. Not only are they cheaper, but it will save you time (and frustration) because golly, this market is popular and the lines to get in run all the way to the entrance of the school.

However, many will find the wait well worth it. As you step in, you’re greeted with the delicious smells of the food court. There’s an incredible selection, from freshly baked pizza, prego rolls and mussels to chilled cocktails, wine, craft beers and even waffles and mini churros. It gives off a Cape Town Harbour market vibe, mashed together with the goodness of Neighbourgoods food.

The design selection is simply incredible. There are stalls jammed into corridors and classrooms, all packed with handmade silver jewellery, artisan teas, ceramic goodies, air plants, pure cotton clothing and leather bags, belts, wallets and more. There are home-baked treats, a stash of pure wool, funky T-shirts, a selection of children’s clothes and even a stall for your furry family members. Although be warned, it doesn’t come cheap.

You’ll definitely want to save up for the next time Kamers rolls into town. And be sure to pack your patience, the place gets crowded and the corridors are small, made even smaller by the stalls jammed in there. However, it’s a great way to spend a weekend. Grab some friends and spend the afternoon soaking in the gorgeous views of the school grounds and stocking up on some magnificent treats.
