Golf day honours legend in medical field

KILLARNEY - Different stakeholders gather together for a golf day to honour first black gynaecologist in private practice in South Africa, a legend in the medical field.

Golfers gathered at Killarney Country Club on 23 March to pay tribute to and honour Dr Jiyane Mbere, the first black gynaecologist in South Africa who ventured into private practice.

Hosted by Golf and Beyond (Gab), a social group society comprising business persons and key decision-makers in the public sector, the event was attended by many golfers who are prominent in different industries.

“Dr Mbere has been selected to be the premiere recipient of this honour because of what he represents to our communities and the medical fraternity,” said Mbulelo Rakwena, director of strategic affairs at Gab.

“Throughout his career, he plied his trade within the black community with diligence, pride and devotion, helping many women with a safe and healthy delivery of their offspring.”

Rakwena shared that the event was not only held to celebrate Mbere as the first black gynaecologist, but as one who paved the way for many whom he inspired to follow in his footsteps.

“He is known by many as a compassionate, diligent and always willing health professional, often going beyond his calling of service to our people,” concluded Rakwena.

Among those who came to honour Mbere, who was present at the event, was Metro FM presenter Tbo Touch, otherwise known as Thabo Molefe.
