Gary Player answers burning questions

JOBURG - Killarney Country Club held its Captain's Day golfing tournament and dinner with special guest and golfing legend, Gary Player.

The day kicked off with a fourball alliance tournament in which Player and club members participated.

At the dinner, members were given the opportunity of participating in a Q & A with Player.

The nine-time Major winner said he knew he could be one of the greats at the tender age of 14. Speaking about the hardships of his youth, Player said, “Suffering was the greatest gift that could be bestowed upon me because through suffering, sometimes, in my case, it helps one to become a world champion.”

He explained the role that Killarney Country Club had played in his golfing career. Player said members of the club had raised R120 000 for him to travel overseas and play for the first time.

He added that longevity had been one of the most important factors determining his greatness in the sport, and the only way to get to that level was through hard work, dedication, application and patience.
