WeThinkCode_ offers free tuition programme

JOHANNESBURG – WeThinkCode_ is offering a free education solution in order to train the next generation of digital innovators.

The technology institution has no teachers, classrooms or tuition and aims to bridge the gap in education, thanks to its ‘no tuition’ policy.

WeThinkCode_ has teamed up with Ecole 42 in France in order to equip South African students with the right skills to become digital problem-solvers and meet the demands of being a software programmer in this day and age.

Founders Arlene Mulder, Camille Agon, Justinus Adriaanse and Yossi Hasson claim that WeThinkCode_ was created in order to provide a solution to free education through rethinking the education model, considering the need for digital skills.

“Computer programmers are going to design the future Africa and we need women and men from all backgrounds to ensure we create a future world that works for all of us,” noted co-founder, Camille Agon.

People between the ages of 17 and 35 can apply to become software engineers through the tuition-free, two-year programme, without having a matric certificate or any specific grades. After passing two initial online aptitude tests, prospective students will undergo a four-week long boot camp to test their abilities, and from there, 120 students will be selected to become part of a digital training programme – the first of its kind in Africa.

The incubation programme also provides a stipend of R2 000 to all students for food and transport, until their first paid internship. The fully-equipped campus is located in the Johannesburg CBD and provides each student with internet access. There are no lecturers, which means the students have to study through peer-to-peer learning, jointly solving complex and relevant challenges.

Paul Leisegang, CEO of OnPoint PR, who is one of the many sponsors on board, stated, “To make a real impact on the education crises, we need a complete rethink of our entire education system. WeThinkCode_ represents a radical, innovative and determined approach to educating our people.”

Those interested are asked to take the online test before 20 March. Those without internet access can text CODE to 43366, and access will be arranged.
