Greenside High School is in high spirits after their 2015 matriculants achieved a 100 percent pass rate with 97 percent of their pupils qualifying for tertiary education.
Seven of the school’s 158 matriculants achieved top results. Suhail Mahomed, head boy of the school was among the top achievers and obtained six distinctions. “I am extremely happy with my results as I felt that the papers last year were more difficult than past papers,” said Mahomed. He will study chartered accountancy at Witwatersrand University.
Nicky Whyte, principal of the school, said she was proud of this year’s matriculants and ecstatic about the 100 percent pass rate. “I know that the pass rate is not the be all and end all, but it is great to have a pass rate where all learners have passed. I commend the grade head for all her faith, belief and encouragement she put into the group.”
She added she was extremely proud of the achievements of pupils in alternative subjects such as electrical technology, computer applications technology, engineering graphics and design, drama and consumer studies.
Despite a broken leg, pupil Tameem Hassem wrote his exams at home and managed to be one of the top achievers by obtaining five distinctions.
Fellow pupil, Nishai Kiran Kooverjee, achieved six distinctions but felt he could have done better. “I got some marks in the high 70s so I want to send those back for a remark. My parents are very proud of me and I will be studying computer science.”
Another pupil with six distinctions, Daniella Nasya Neville, was amazed by her results. “I am happy that I was able to achieve this because some of the papers were really tricky. I will be studying at Stellenbosch University, a bachelor of arts in language and culture.
Other pupils with five distinctions included Victor Chen, Clarke Nina Cloe and Maia Lehr-Sacks.
