Memorial race at Joburg Zoo a success

BRAAMFONTEIN –The Gerald Fox Memorial Race was once again successfully hosted by Rockies Road Runners at the Johannesburg Zoo.

The race is held annually in honour of Gerald Fox, one of the mainstays at the running club, since 2004 after he was fatally injured during an attempted robbery the year before.

This year, the event was sponsored by Sasfin and Ram Hand to Hand Couriers.

Consisting of a 21km running race, a 10km running race and a 10km walking race, as well as a shorter fun run within the zoo, almost 3 000 runners and walkers of all shapes and sizes participated, regardless of the dreary, wet weather experienced on the morning.

The results for the different categories were as follows:

10km run:

Men’s Open – First place taken by Michael Pienaar in 00:32:00. Second place went to Pule Maeko in 00:32:15, and third place was taken by Raphael Segodi in 00:32:59.

Women’s Open – Lisiwe Mabona came first with a time of 00:37:47, Mpho Mbuza came second with 00:38:28, and Ricci-Lee Brookstone took third place in a time of 00:42:49.

10km walk:

Men’s Open – Lebogang Shange took first place in 00:47:49, Mthunzi Mnisi took second place with a time of 00:48:12, and Mduduzi Mavundla took third place in 00:48:45.

Women’s Open – Lesley van Buuren won in 00:58:35, Nthatisi Mokhele took second in 01:01:00, and Rose Tshabalala took third in a time of 01:07:19.

21km run:

Men’s Open – Retsepile Khotle took first in 01:08:22, Derocious Makhobalo came second in 01:12:36, and Jonas Makhele took third in 01:12:38.

Women’s Open – Portia Ngwenya came first in a time of 01:31:21, Anne Stewart took second in 01:35:01, and Helen Ibbotson took third in 01:36:00.
