Classic fun in Parkhurst

PARKHURST –The Annual Craft Vintage Heritage Car and Bike Day was held along Fourth Avenue in Parkhurst and crowds of classic motoring lovers came from far and wide to view the host of magnificent and historic automobiles.

Hosted by Craft Restaurant in conjunction with the Vintage and Veteran Club, the event was a stunning success, just as it had been in previous years. From Model T Fords, to Rolls Royce Silver Ghosts dating back to 1921, to classic Royal Enfields and BSA motorcycles – which participated in the annual Durban to Johannesburg Run which has been taking place since 1913 – it all was a feast for any motorhead’s eyes.

The delightful sound of swing could also be heard as gramophones (created before World War II) were wound up, adding to the feeling of being completely taken back in time.

Co-owner of Craft Restaurant, Jo Pinheiro, said the establishment was proud to be part this prestigious event and was amazed at how it had grown since its inception five years ago.

“We host this event with the objective of identifying with Parkhurst’s unique heritage and the many unique residents that live here,” said Pinheiro.

“The great thing about an event like this, is that it creates a sense of nostalgia, back to a time of the high streets. The feel-good aspect of these vintage vehicles resonates with local residents from all walks of life and of all ages.”

Paul Koski, who is treasurer for the Vintage and Veteran Club of Johannesburg, felt that these events were important because they allowed the club to share the rich history of motoring with the public, who would otherwise never have the opportunity to see these icons of transport antiquity.

“Instead of these cars and motorcycles being stowed away for safekeeping, or only displayed in private clubs, we can actually put them in a public space at an event like this,” Koski explained.

“And Fourth Avenue in Parkhurst is obviously the perfect spot to host it, because it offers people the option of enjoying some food and refreshments at the various cafés while they watch the cars and bikes drive up and down. Hopefully next year, we will get to close to the road entirely.”
