South Africa mourns Mme Ruth Mompati

JOBURG - Condolences continue to pour in for African National Congress (ANC) stalwart and former MP, Ambassador and Mayor Ruth Mompati.

Mompati, who died on 11 May at the age of 89 after a short illness, will be best remembered for her selflessness and discipline.

Supra Mahumapelo, ANC Chairperson for the North West said earlier this year, “We want to thank you for being selfless, for being disciplined. Remember Mme Ruth was given the highest honour of the ANC,” he said.

She was among the organisers of the historic women’s anti-pass law march to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956, alongside Gertrude Shope, Helen Joseph and Lillian Ngoyi.

Last month, the North West government unveiled a statue for her in Vryburg, where Mompati urged the youth to stand up and be counted.

“Unless we can stand up and be counted we cannot move our youth and people forward,” said Mompati.
