Last Man Stands head for Barbados

PARKVIEW- THREE Parkview-based teams are set to be competing in the largest amateur cricket league in the world from 19 to 29 March.

The Last Man Stands World Champion Finals will be held in the breathtakingly beautiful Barbados at the Kensington Oval.

The rules of Last Man Stands don’t follow the traditional cricket rules. Instead of having eleven players, teams are comprised of eight team members and each game is two hours long. Overs are five balls each instead of six, and the batsman must retire at 50.

The Parkview teams competing are On The Field, Uncle Billy’s and The Barbarians which is a mixture of four South African and four Australian players.

Wesley Briggs captain of the On The Field team said he had been participating in the league since the concept was brought to South Africa.

“We are extremely excited to be participating,” said Briggs.

According to the head of global operations for Last Man Stands, Murray Taylor 32 teams from the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Trinidad, Barbados, Tobago and South Africa will be competing for the prestigious title.

Founded by Bjorn Briggs and Wayne Greave in 2005, Last Man Stands started as an idea and is now globally recognised.

The idea was to make cricket accessible as possible to cricket lovers and based on that sentiment Last Man Stands was founded. Now, 50 000 player’s take part globally and there are roughly 2 000 teams.

“In South Africa alone we play over 4 000 cricket games,” said Taylor.
