VIDEO: Flying squad members chase suspects through streets of Rosebank

ROSEBANK - The video was originally posted on YouTube by Justice GP. It appears to show members of the flying squad chasing the three suspects in the hijacked white Jetta through the streets of Rosebank on 6 March.

UPDATE: 8 March, 11.30am:

Rosebank Police Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Logan Govender confirmed that it was members of the Gauteng Flying Squad who chased down the hijacked vehicle outside the Rosebank Police Station.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza was unable to comment on the video but stated that police vehicles are not officially installed with dashboard cameras.

The footage appears to have been taken from a dashboard camera on the Flying Squad members vehicle. The video shows the vehicle driving on Jan Smuts Avenue and shows where the flying squad members caught up to the suspects on Jellicoe Avenue. The suspects refused to stop and drove away from police. When they turned onto Sturdee Avenue it appears that the flying squad members fired shots at the suspects’ vehicle. The suspects lost control of their vehicle and crashed at the corner of Sturdee and Tyrwhitt avenues.

After the Jetta crashed, one flying squad member in police clothing and others in civilian clothing can be seen pulling the three suspects out of the vehicle and making them lie flat on the ground.

Rosebank Killarney Gazette is awaiting comment from the Flying Squad on the video.

UPDATE:

Three suspects were arrested and two unlicensed firearms and a hijacked white Jetta were recovered on Tyrwhitt Avenue on the afternoon of 6 March. A video online shows footage of the high speed chase.

The white Jetta which the suspects were driving was hijacked in Yeovile on 2 March. The Jetta’s tracking device alerted the police, Metro police and the Flying Squad that the vehicle was on Jellicoe Road in Rosebank.

Rosebank police spokesperson Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe said police tried to stop the suspects on Tyrwhitt Avenue.

Mdletshe said the suspects refused to stop and drove through the red traffic light at the intersection of Tyrwhitt and Sturdee avenues. The driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. The suspects then tried to flee but police caught them. Mdletshe said police shot one suspect in the leg and the suspect’s head was also injured in the collision. He was taken to hospital for further treatment.

The suspects are between the ages of 29 and 38.

Mdletshe said they recovered two unlicensed firearms from the scene.

Two other cars, a Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Tucson collided after the suspects drove through the intersection. The driver of the Hyundai Tucson was injured in the crash and was treated by paramedics on scene. The driver of the Toyota was not injured and refused to answer questions.

It appeared that the two other suspects may also have suffered minor injuries from the crash.
