VIDEO: Taxi violence erupts on William Nicol, 1 killed

UPDATE: 17:20pm – Taxi violence has left one man dead and another injured on William Nicol Drive, Sandton.

According to police and paramedics at the scene the man was hit by a taxi which dragged him across the road.

Michael Kesse who was a witness at the scene stated that before the accident he saw the man running along the road.

“I saw a male running along the road, into oncoming traffic, he got hit by a taxi from the one side of the road and he flew to the other. I saw a bit of his leg bend the other way, there was blood splattered across both sides of the road.”

“It looked like a hit and run,” said another witness, Maggie Wessels who stopped at the scene.

“I drove up and saw this person who had collapsed and I actually thought he was a street kid who dead,” she explained.

Wessels called the police who arrived on the scene minutes later.

Staff members of Shell Garage refused to comment, however according to one witness who requested to remain anonymous, a taxi driver was beaten with rocks at the garage then stabbed with a screwdriver by another taxi driver.

“The taxi driver who stabbed the man tried to run away, and was run over by another taxi and died on the scene,” said the witness.

Police are still investigating the matter.

According to taxi drivers at the scene, there is a taxi war between Faraday and Alexandra taxi associations. “We are fighting for taxi routes to Bryanston,” said one taxi driver who refused to be named.

Spokesperson for Metro police Wayne Minnaar said, “The incident is as a result of taxi violence, the matter is under investigation. We believe that taxi owners are fighting with each other over taxi routes.”

UPDATE: 4pm – The man who was knocked down and killed by a taxi. The man is also believed to have stabbed another man at the Shell garage on William Nicol Drive.

A taxi association has blocked one of the lanes on William Nicol.

UPDATE: 25 February 2015, 15:45pm – According to our journalist at the scene, the man who was killed is believed to be a taxi driver. He was knocked dead by a taxi going up William Nicol.

Initial report: 25 February 2015, 15:23pm We have received reports of taxi violence taking place on William Nicol Drive towards the Hyde Park area.

According to our journalist who is at the scene, one man has been shot dead and another was stabbed and transported to Joburg Gen Hospital.

It is believed that a shoot out is currently taking place on William Nicol Drive in Bryanston.
