Metro police investigate ‘corrupt colleagues’

JOBURG - The Johannesburg Metro Police raised their grave concerns over the numerous recent reports of bribery and corruption allegedly involving its officers.

Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said they were treating the reports with the seriousness and urgency they deserve to ensure that such illegal practices are completely rooted out of the system. Minnaar said, “The department’s… zero tolerance, anti-corruption stance [is] aimed at stamping out all forms of corruption.”

He also appealed to the public to report criminal activities. Minnaar said, “Should a corrupt officer ask for a bribe or extort money, members of the public are urged to immediately report them to the department via the 24-hour anti-corruption hotline, 0800 203 712.”

He also revealed that Metro police received footage from members of the public which was referred to the department’s internal affairs unit.

Minnaar stated, “Our internal affairs unit has the footage and is investigating.”

He revealed that three alleged Metro police officers were captured on CCTV and a cellphone camera soliciting or accepting bribes in two separate incidents. He said Metro police do not tolerate corruption.

He added that members of the public should understand the Criminal Procedure Act. Minnaar said, “According to the act, both the corrupter and the corruptee are guilty of corruption and both can be criminally charged.”
