Spinathon for animals in distress

HOUGHTON - The Society for Animals in Distress (Said) recently enjoyed being part of a spinathon held in Virgin Active at the Old Eds Sports Club.

Vladimir, a gorgeous husky and regular volunteer for the organisation, participated in monthly weekend collections which are held at various stores around Johannesburg.

The friendly husky is really an all-rounder in raising funds, and is active on GivenGain, a fundraising platform for the same organisation.

As he is the adventurous type, Vladimir decided to get a group of passionate, animal loving types together, called them Vladimir’s Valkyries, and hosted a spinathon on 1 November.

Substantial fun and funds were raised for the charity and Vladimir greeted everyone going to the gym that morning.

The aim of this spinathon was to raise funds, all in aid of his two-legged mum, Gilli Read, who rode the Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge, in a Said riding kit of course.

Carmen Douglas-Kilfoil from Said’s fundraising team said, “We think Vlad did a fantastic job as a host and fundraiser. He was certainly an eye-catcher greeting everyone at the gym. For us, having champions like Gilli and Vladimir supporting our organisation isn’t just about the fundraising, it’s also about the fun, adventures, being there to support our supporters and ultimately to create awareness of the important veterinary care service, education and empowerment we provide in eight townships.”
