Excavated water pipes left dug up

Since the beginning of pipe excavations in some parts of the Parks in June, some residents have raised some concerns over the dug-up pavements that have been left unrepaired.

Parkview resident, Kerry Cooper said the pavement on the corner of Jan Smuts and Tyrone avenues had been left unrepaired for over a month after new water pipes were installed.

“The process seemed so efficient to start with, but unfortunately they seem to have left big holes on a number of corners, which are really dangerous,” she said.

Cooper also lodged the complaint with Joburg Water.

The Parkview resident said although she was upset at the state the pavement had been left in, she had to commend Joburg Water for responding to her complaint in a timeous manner.

Spokesperson for Joburg Water, Millicent Kabwe explained that the open excavations Cooper had referred to were related to an infrastructure project the department was busy with.

“The reason why there is still open excavations is due to the fact that the new water pipes have been tied into the existing infrastructure to make them operational at the points where the excavation is left open,” said Kabwe.

“Due to the Numsa strike, the contractors could not procure the required fittings to do these tie-ins at the time. The procurement process has, however, now started and the tie-ins should be done soon”.
