Expert recommends smaller security companies

Homeowners are left wondering who they can trust to protect their homes and their families.

This according to founder of local online crime-fighting initiative, www.eblockwatch.co.za, Andre Snyman after CCTV footage emerged of a security company seemingly standing by as criminals invaded a Houghton residence was shared on social media platforms.

After viewing the footage there was a huge response from community members who also shared their security company experiences, as well as disclosing their fears and frustrations.

Snyman has criticised the bigger international security companies, saying that although they have the power of marketing on their side, they fail to give their clients a real sense of security.

He went on to recommend that homeowners seriously consider procuring the services of the smaller, community-based security companies instead.

“I don’t know about you, but I personally don’t know if I could be comfortable handing my key over to a company that employs over 40 000 staff members. The officers change shifts, they have no real relationship with their clients and in many situations, when something does go wrong, it’s difficult to hold the security company accountable,” he explained.

“There’s a sense of loyalty among community-initiated security companies because when a home in the area is threatened, then the whole unit feels threatened.

“With the smaller companies, clients are more than just a house number – their clients are the people they go to church with, they are the people they see in coffee shops, and the people they meet up with at the local grocery store.”

Snyman believes it is because of this that the smaller security companies can spot unfamiliar vehicles and people within the area, thus focusing on preventing home invasions before they happen.

“The selling points of many of the bigger security companies is that clients pay for protection and an armed response, yet I believe that once [someone] can enter my house without my consent, then the company has failed to protect me”.

Do you agree? Would you prefer using a smaller security company?
