Making every day a Mandela Day

South African packaged goods company, Tiger Brands, has partnered up with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Department of Basic Education ahead of Mandela Day.

The parties will kick-off Mandela Month by distributing over 17 000 food parcels to primary school pupils in Alexandra.

As the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s pioneering food security partner, Tiger Brands aims to contribute towards the eradication of food insecurity that affects learners and sustain them during the long school holidays.

According to the communications and research director for the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Danielle Melville, the programme is more than just filling up the tummies of little ones.

“Food security is about the restoration of dignity, and through that the empowerment to allow for growth, development and further opportunity,” said Melville.

“It is our duty, as Madiba did, to serve every day, and more importantly to live his legacy to the fullest.”

The Department of Education runs the National School Nutrition Programme that provides pupils with lunch, while the Tiger Brands Foundation complements the programme by feeding 39 350 pupils in 62 non-fee paying schools with its in-school breakfast feeding programme.

The National Development Plan promotes public-private partnerships that help to build a better South Africa, and Tiger Brands, with its partners, aligns to the plan’s call to improve food security.

“This project is part of our drive to tackle food insecurity in a sustainable and impactful manner,” said Alex Mathole, group executive at Tiger Brands.
