Drunk drivers warned

PARKVIEW – Police have issued a warning to motorists driving while under the influence of alcohol after 19 drunk drivers were arrested in seven days.

Pakrview police arrested 62 people over the period of 19 to 16 June, 36 were illegal immigrants, 19 drunk drivers and others were arrested for theft, possession of drugs and reckless driving.

While the Parks has an active night life, with restaurants, pubs and clubs, police said there was a zero tolerance approach to drunk driving. Parkview police spokesperson Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha said, “Those found to be in conflict with the law will be arrested.”

According to Arrive Alive, drunk driving is one of the biggest threats to road safety in the country and half of people who die on the roads have a blood alcohol concentration above 0.05g per 100ml.

The consequences of drunk driving can include up to six years’ imprisonment, fines of up to R120 000, suspension of driver’s licence, and a criminal record which could have serious implications on one’s life.
