Sci-Bono launches a Week of Code

NEWTOWN – Sci – Bono Discovery Centre today joined global behemoths Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox, Will.I.am and many others to empower the youth to change the world.

In partnership with Microsoft, Sci-Bono Discovery Centre joined the ranks of dozens of international organisations, and more than 37 million people around the world in a global campaign to teach people to “code”.

Coding is the language that computers “speak”, and communicating with a computer allows one to make it do certain things, things modern society may rely on, they said.

With the support of Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and the founders of Twitter, Dropbox and many others, an online movement called code.org has swept the globe and is now available to South Africans in the form of a week-long programme that has so far seen around 150 kids learn more about coding at the centre.

The programme kicked off with the aim of establishing what the level of interest was among local youth wanting to learn how to code. Microsoft, in partnership with a global telecommunications giant, will soon be offering training all around the country.

The training will be aimed at individuals in a position to train others, like teachers. But everybody with an interest in the world of IT can learn how to code by visiting the code.org website where you can learn the art of coding online.
