Paid Parking terminated in Parkhurst

Paid parking in Parkhurst is going to be phased out and removed by the end of July.

UPDATE: 3 July 2014:

The JMPD has instructed Ace Parking to terminate the management of paid parking on 4th Avenue in Parkhurst.

This comes after the Mayoral Committee in February this year agreed on a comprehensive parking management approach and plan for small nodes to be implemented in partnership with relevant local stakeholders. The Mayoral Committee made the decision based on a parking management study of 25 small nodes across the City done by the Transport Department.

Since then several consultative meetings have been held between Parkhurst stakeholders and various City Departments co-ordinated by the Transport Department and a comprehensive plan to improve the parking management of the area was developed.

Initial report: This is according to Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck and the chairperson of the suburb’s residents and business owners association’s chairperson, Cheryl Labuschagne.

This comes after a two-and-a-half-year battle between the city council, residents and business owners based in Parkhurst.

According to Truluck, the matter was officially confirmed on 10 June and paid parking should totally be phased out by July.

“Kerbside parking will be moving to Rosebank – in the lower central business district and thus should not have an impact on residents,” he said.

“One of the biggest concerns is that jobs would be lost but this will not be the case as all the employees will be moving to the Rosebank node.”

Truluck said until bylaws are changed in Parkhurst, paid parking would not be viable, but he was hoping that once the changes have been made, paid parking – with input from the residents – will be returned to the suburb.

Cheryl Labuschagne tweeted: “FANTASTIC news for @Parkhurst_JHB – Ace Parking to be phased out by 30 June! Well done @CityofJoburgZA and @MyJRA for hearing us @jozi117”
