Water leak swamps Jan Smuts Avenue

Smelly, dirty water leaks onto Jan Smuts Avenue.

Water seeping out of a manhole on the corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Selborne Road goes attended for three days after Joburg Water said the leak had not been reported.

A street beggar who regularly operates on the intersection, known only as Nashney, said the smelly leak began on Monday evening and on Wednesday morning (4 June) the water was still seeping onto the main road and swamping the street.

Upon investigation, The Gazette noticed that motorists travelling South on Jan Smuts Avenue were forced to use two lanes on the three-lane road, which resulted in backed-up traffic during evening rush hour on 3 June.

Spokesperson for Joburg Water, Millicent Kabwe said the department doesn’t always pick up issues if they are not reported.

“The issue [of the water leak on Jan Smuts Avenue] was not brought to our attention hence it is not attended to yet,” she said.

“I have reported it to the depot responsible, and our turnaround time for burst pipes is 48 hours but we try to respond quicker where possible.”

Although, Nashney said that there have been similar incidents of water leaks at the same intersection, Kabwe said Joburg Water did not have a record of recurring problems at the intersection.
