Paid parking could move Rosebank

Visitors to the Parkhurst business hub could feel some relief as the kerbside paid parking contract may be moved from Parkhurst and into Rosebank.

This was according to Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck.

He said after a huge public furore, the paid parking system was reviewed after its implementation in 2011.

“The Department of Transport did a study of 30 different nodes and looked at the needs in all nodes,” said Truluck.

The councillor said paid parking in Parkhurst was needed so there could be a turnover for the businesses in the area, however, Truluck felt that there needed to be conditions in implementing the process.

“These conditions can be set out but our bylaws do not make provisions for this to happen at the moment,” he said.

“The studies done showed that, at the moment, Rosebank was more suitable for a paid parking system to be implemented.”

Truluck said he, together with the relevant officials consisting of members from the Metro police and from the City of Joburg, recently took a walkabout in Rosebank to see where paid parking could be accommodated.

“We looked at placing it in the upper and lower parts of Rosebank. Various things were considered such as the controlling turnover for parking so that businesses could also benefit from it,” said Truluck.

The paid parking contract is due for renewal in June and until bylaws can be changed to suit provisions for a paid parking system in Parkhurst, Truluck said there was a huge possibility that Rosebank may be swapped for Parkhurst where paid parking is concerned.

Do you think that moving paid parking from Parkhurst to Rosebank is a good idea?
