ROSEBANK – Crime statistics released by the Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa have painted a bleak picture for Rosebank Police Station’s fight against crime.

Serious crimes such as burglary at residential premises and robbery with aggravating circumstances, for example, have risen to 97 and 72, respectively.

Statistics suggested that theft out of or from motor vehicles continues to be a hard nut to crack after 195 cases were reported for the period 2012/2013, a far cry from the 72 cases recorded in 2009.

Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm rose from 35 to 47 and common assault increased from 59 to 60.

There had been no murder cases reported but common robbery cases increased from 14 to 27.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom. There had been some decreases on crimes like malicious damage to property, which went down from 76 to 57.

Theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles also decreased from 108 to 98.

Statistics showed that residents were still troubled by burglaries at non-residential premises, which rose from 42 to 43 cases.

Robbery at residential premises increased from 19 to 23 while robbery at non-residential premises rose from 8 to 13.

Commercial crime decreased from 252 to 213 and shoplifting rose from 89 to 99.
