The artistic combination of comedy and hypnotism

Andre plans a series of farewell shows as he nears the end of his career.

Falling under the spell of a comedian with hypnotic powers may evoke fear or curiosity, but all would agree that being the observer is the prime seat. Local resident and seasoned performer, André The Hilarious Hypnotist blends his unique talents of persuasion with wacky comedy to leave his audience truly entertained.

Almost three decades after his first performance at The Victory Theatre in Houghton, André continues to tour the country. Starting his career by working for a private entertainer in Johannesburg, he took control of his destiny 18 years ago by crafting his own production. His training by hypnosis legend Max Collie gave him the skills and techniques needed to perfect his mind-control act.

When truly in full swing, it can seem as if André has his subjects controlled with strings. Trademark manipulations include having his puppets impersonate animals, speaking foreign languages and becoming fluent in Moon-speak. André admits to not having magical powers though. “People actually hypnotise themselves. All I do is just talk to them in a skilled manner and they do the rest. It really does depend on the individual, as some as more susceptible others,” he revealed.

After a long career featuring memorable milestones of selling out Durban Theatre, Carnival City and Montecasino’s Studio Theatre, he looks back proudly on his time on stage. “I have not been nervous before a show for many years. It is just so natural now,” he said. With a 15-date countrywide tour planned for May, rumours are swirling that this may just be the last time we see André in his famous multi-coloured cape.
