Today in history: David Frost wins big in Stellenbosch

David shot a 3-under 68 in the final round and claimed the $1 million prize by beating Germany’s Sven Struver and fellow South African, Ernie Els to win the grand prize.

On 24 January 1999, South African golfer David Frost won his second South African Open Championship at the Stellenbosch Golf Club in Cape Town.

David shot a 3-under 68 in the final round and claimed the $1 million prize by beating Germany’s Sven Struver and fellow South African, Ernie Els to win the grand prize.

He turned professional in 1981 and had his first professional win in 1983, he has won several tournaments throughout his career, including the Gordon’s Gin Challenge (1983), The Nedbank Golf Challenge (1989) and his first South African Open in 1986.

Most of his victories were at the Gary Player Country Club at Sun City, in 1999 Frost won his second South African Open Championship at the Stellenbosch Golf Club in Cape Town.
