Word of the day

The word of the day for 18 January is: Cherish.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines cherish as holding something dear.

There are so many dark clouds in the world today. Bad news is everywhere, so we need to find some light to hold onto. We need to identify what is good, what is happy, and what is beautiful, and cherish it. Stewart Udall said, “Cherish sunsets, wild creatures and wild places. Have a love affair with the wonder and beauty of the earth.”

We also need to cherish the people who are important to us; the people who we put our trust in and who are there for us; the people who make us better. There are so many fake people these days. They are around when everything is going well and you have everything worked out, but they seem to disappear when you need friendship and reassurance. That is why when we find people who are there for us through thick and thin we should appreciate them and never let them down. Ritu Ghatourey said, “Cherish those who proven their love. It’s a lot easier for someone to be nice to you on a beautiful day when the sun is shining, but in a heavy storm is where you learn who truly cares.”

While we can try and stay away from the bad things in life and keep focused on the good things, it isn’t always possible. Things we don’t like are bound to happen, and no matter how much they hurt, there is a lesson in them and when we see the sad things in life, we appreciate the happy one’s so much more. Tariq Ramadan said, “Cherish your tears and their reasons, they will be the light of your smile, your inner peace and reconciliation.”
