South Africa was suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1970 following a resolution taken against the South African government

10 November 1991 saw the South African cricket team, now better known as the Proteas, play their first match on their return to international cricket against India in Calcutta, India.

South Africa was suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1970 following a resolution taken against the South African government’s apartheid policy.

This led to South Africa playing only against rebel teams from England, Australia and New Zealand, and only fielding white players.

Players such as Graeme Pollock, Barry Richards and Mike Procter were not part of that decision.

Following South Africa’s re-admission to the international arena by the ICC, the Proteas have gone on to establish themselves as one of the best teams in the world.
