Word of the day

The word of the day for 22 October is: Equality.

Equality is defined as the state of being equal; especially in status, rights, or opportunities.

Many people preach equality, but not many people practice it to the extent they should. They would like to be treated fairly and not be judged on race, religion, gender, and social status, but they do not do the same.

An unknown author wrote, “Until you treat everyone as equals, you have no right to complain about the treatment you receive from others”.

You cannot be selectively accepting and then complain that you are not accepted. If you want to fight for equality, you need to treat others as equals as well.

The way people treat others is a true sign of who they are as a person. A primary theme in the Harry Potter books is the mistreatment of inferiors, or people seen to be of a lower class. In the book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the character Sirius Black said, “If you want to know what a man is like, take a look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals”.

A true sign of character is not in how someone treats the people whom they see as on the same level as themselves, but in how they treat someone they see as of a lower class. Equality should not be selective, but instead, it should be indiscriminate and widely spread.
