Safari in Pilanesberg or Madikwe?

When faced with destinations such as Pilanesberg & Madikwe which are both within easy reach and host the Big 5, which do you choose?

Most people live such busy lives that it’s often a struggle to get away from the hustle and bustle. Weekend getaways have become the most feasible option for many, with game reserves featuring at the top of most travel wishlists. But choosing a destination can be rather challenging for most, especially for first time safari goers and families with young kids. When faced with destinations such as Pilanesberg & Madikwe which are both within easy reach and host the Big 5, which do you choose?

Pilanesberg is a national park which means that although it’s a fenced off conservation area and managed by a team of highly trained rangers and conservationists, it is open to the public for day visits. The 55 000 hectare park is located 2 hours from Johannesburg in the North West Province and boasts over 200 kilometers of roads. Although smaller than other game reserves in South Africa, Pilanesberg is rich in wildlife, providing sanctuary to over 7000 animals and 360 bird species.

The chances of seeing the Big 5 here is incredibly high, as well as a number of fascinating birds such as fish eagles, kingfishers and cormorants. With a bird’s hide close to the water’s edge, there are also plenty of opportunities for incredible photography. Pilanesberg offers a variety of accommodation options to choose from, making it possible for all to enjoy a safari.

Madikwe Game Reserve is privately owned and located three and a half hours from Johannesburg. The 75 000 hectares game reserve is not open to the public but rather guests staying at one of the various luxury lodges scattered throughout the reserve. There are a number of family-friendly options and exclusive use lodges and camps for friends and family get togethers.

The safari experience at Madikwe is exceptional, with off-road game drives and guided bush walks that bring you that much closer with various animals. The reserve boasts all the members of the Big 5 but also offers sightings of rare species such as cheetah, aardwolf, hyena and wild dogs. Madikwe is also a bird watching paradise with a healthy bird population, including sightings of hornbills, robins, kingfishers and various eagles.
